Most people don’t listen to understand, they listen to respond.
So, if they are not listening to you and your ideas, it’s most likely because you’re not speaking in a way that makes them care.
To be listened to you need to start with why they should care about your idea.
People will pay attention when you can show them how your idea solves their problem and aligns with what they want to achieve.
You must begin with their ‘why’.
Next, make sure you speak their language and deliver your ideas in a way that resonates with how they think. Talk numbers to the Finance team and results to your boss.
Adapt what you say and how you say it to your audience’s needs and interests.
Spark their curiosity to drive home your point. Ask them questions to keep them interested and lead them to the conclusion you want them to draw. Listen to what they say and show how your idea can solve their problem.
Keep it short but punchy. Be memorable and to the point. Use a surprising fact, a bold question or an interesting insight.
Stay consistent with your message; people need to hear an idea several times before it clicks. Reinforce your message with every opportunity, even if you think you sound like a broken record.
Remember:
- lead with their ‘why’
- speak their language
- spark their curiosity
- keep it short
- be memorable
- reinforce your message consistently
